In line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and in implementation of the national strategic plan for women, the Women’s Affairs Division at the University of Information Technology and Communications (UoITC) organized an awareness lecture titled: “Legal Protection of Female Employees and Ways to Empower Them Administratively.”
The lecture was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Rana Jasem Mohammed from the Legal Department.
The lecture addressed the concept of women’s professional empowerment as one of the key foundations to support their career path. It emphasized the importance of a legislative environment that safeguards women’s rights and ensures equality in assuming public office and candidacy for senior positions based on competence and merit. The lecture also shed light on the role of institutions and administrative bodies in supporting the requirements for protecting women in the workplace, along with the need to change certain misconceptions and harmful social traditions that hinder women’s work and active participation.
The lecture reviewed the main legal obstacles facing women, including gaps in certain legislations that are meant to protect them in the workplace. It also discussed relevant Iraqi laws concerning female employees, such as the provisions governing women’s access to public office, their appointment requirements, financial rights related to salary and allowances, and legally prescribed leaves — including maternity leave, childbirth leave, spousal accompaniment leave, and widowhood leave — as well as the rules governing resignation and retirement from public service.
