The Psychological Counseling Unit at the University of Information Technology and Communications (UoITC) in cooperation with the Center of Continuing Eucation held an online awareness seminar titled “Drugs and Their Psychological and Social Impacts in Exacerbating the Phenomenon of Suicide.”

The seminar, presented by Asst. Lecturer. Kholoud Saad Mohammed, addressed the definition of drugs, their nature, and their direct impact on the nervous system and its functions. It also provided a detailed explanation of the main motivations for drug use, which vary between social factors—such as family disintegration, unemployment, and peer influence—and psychological factors related to depression, anxiety, trauma, and low self-esteem.

The seminar further reviewed the psychological and social consequences of drug abuse, including mood disorders and impaired behavioral control, in addition to rising crime rates, deviant behaviors, and the breakdown of family relationships. It also highlighted the connection between drug use and increasing suicide rates, which often stem from psychological imbalance and a profound sense of hopelessness.

The seminar concluded with the emphasis upon placing the importance of strengthening awareness and prevention programs, providing both psychological and social support, and adopting comprehensive treatment strategies to mitigate this dangerous phenomenon—particularly to protect young people.
