The College of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Information Technology and Communications organized a workshop entitled “AlphaFold and the Future of Protein Science: Insight from 2024 Nobel Prize”, presented by Ali Abdul Qader Mahdi, lecturer in the Department of Bioinformatics. The workshop addressed the importance of understanding the three-dimensional structure of proteins and its pivotal role in several scientific and applied fields, including the discovery of new drugs and understanding the physiology of diseases. The workshop also focused on the revolutionary tool AlphaFold, which has revolutionized the field of predicting the three-dimensional shapes of proteins with high accuracy, and whose developers were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The workshop concluded with an emphasis on the importance of enhancing collaboration between the college’s various disciplines, particularly between computer science and biology, for its crucial role in finding innovative solutions. The workshop witnessed a remarkable interaction from attendees, who expressed great interest in the research and application capabilities offered by this tool, opening up new horizons for scientific research in the biological and medical sciences.
