The University of Information Technology and Communications organized a lecture on extremism leading to terrorism, which was presented by Dr. Ayad Tariq Abdul Majeed from the Department of Scholarships and Cultural Relations, in which he discussed the definition of violent extremism and its types. The lecture highlighted the factors and circumstances that lead to extremism, such as political, economic, and social conditions in societies, in addition to manifestations of violent extremism, fanaticism of opinion, violence in dealing, extremism, suspicion of others, and violent extremism that leads to terrorism. The lecture discussed the steps taken by Iraq to confront violent extremism, including the establishment of the National Committee to Combat Violent Extremism, the adoption of a national strategy to combat extremism, cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, as well as the establishment of the Iraqi Center affiliated with the General Secretariat of the Al-Abbas’s Holy Shrine. The lecture referred to several treatments and recommendations, including the necessity of including the curricula with topics of citizenship and moral values, activating the partnership between official and unofficial institutions, expanding the establishment of research centers, and taking into account the role of educational institutions in supporting the culture of peaceful coexistence.
