The University of Information Technology and Communications (UoITC) organized a symposium on encouraging women’s participation in elections, constitutional guarantees, and effective strategies.
The symposium was presented by assistant lecturers Murooj Abbas Mutlaq from the Department of Legal Affairs, and Nairi Abdullah Naeem from the College of Business Informatics. It aimed to support and encourage women in political and electoral process and the necessity for women to be key players and participants in it. The first part of the symposium dealt with constitutional guarantees and participation in political and electoral process, emphasizing that the democratic system is based on gender equality in all fields, whether political, economic, or social. Since Iraq is approaching legislative elections in November 2025, it is necessary to strengthen women’s political role and encourage their participation in the electoral process
While the second part of the symposium showed effective strategies to achieve participation and protect women from political violence and blackmail, enacting laws that protect and support women, and ensuring their implementation, especially the women’s quota along with providing financial incentives for parties that guarantee women’s representation on their lists. Effective strategies and plans that encourage women’s political role and also enhance their participation were also discussed. It also focused on raising awareness and education by holding workshops and seminars that encourage and support women and providing a safe environment for women in voting. This is consistent with achieving Goal (5) of the Sustainable Development Goals that are related to gender equality.
