UoITC Holds Online Workshop on Legal Protection Against Cyber Extortion: Deterrence and Prevention Mechanisms
The Psychological Counseling Department, in collaboration with the Legal Affairs Department, organized an online workshop titled “Legal Protection Against Cyber Extortion: Deterrence and Prevention Mechanisms,” presented by lecturer assist. Lec. Maryam Razaq Wadi.
The workshop aimed to raise legal and technical awareness among students and the community, highlighting the dangers of cyber extortion and ways to combat it within a comprehensive legislative and educational framework. The workshop covered the definition of cyber extortion and its legal concept, the elements of the crime, and the components of legal responsibility. It also reviewed its most prominent forms and its psychological, social, and legal impacts on individuals and institutions.
Additionally, the role of Iraqi legislation in addressing these crimes was discussed, along with the nature of legal penalties, and technical means for prevention were suggested, such as protecting accounts and digital data, and enhancing awareness of methods of cyber fraud.
At the end of the workshop, a set of recommendations was presented, calling for enhanced cooperation between academic and security entities, increased awareness programs, and the development of educational policies that contribute to protecting society from the risks of cyber extortion.
