In accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and in celebration of Geological Diversity Day in Iraq, the Department of Studies and Planning—through the university’s Sustainable Development Unit—organized an interactive event titled “Our Geological Diversity… A Heritage We Preserve for a Sustainable Future”, and the event aimed to highlight Iraq’s rich geological landscape, its environmental and scientific significance, and its role in supporting sustainable development pathways.
The activity was presented by Assist. Lect. Abeer Abdul-Adheem Sa’ad, a faculty member and head of the Sustainable Development Unit, alongside Assist. Lect. Helen Anwar, a faculty member from the Human Resources Department, and they highlighted key aspects of Iraq’s geological diversity, framing it as a national natural heritage that must be preserved—a cause that also requires raising awareness about its significance.
The activity included the creation of an interactive map of Iraq, which showcased prominent rock and mineral formations, geological features, as well as various natural sites and resources, and this provided university staff and students with the opportunity to explore the country’s geographical and geological characteristics through an interactive approach that blends scientific knowledge with exploration, helping to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and their real-world spatial applications.
This activity is part of the Sustainable Development Unit’s efforts to embed an environmental culture within the university community, raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural heritage and protecting national resources—ensuring their sustainability for future generations—and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, as it aligns with Goal 4 (Quality Education) by employing interactive learning methods and disseminating scientific knowledge, and Goal 15 (Life on Land) by fostering awareness of the need to protect ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, and safeguard Iraq’s geological resources.
