The University Psychological Counseling Division, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center (CEC) at University of Information Technology and Communications (UoITC), organized an awareness seminar entitled: ”The Digital Space and Its Role in Combating Violent Extremism to Preserve Community Security”.
The seminar, presented by Assistant Lecturer Furat Kadhim Jalloub from the Department of Media and Government Communication, addressed the concept of digital space and its relationship to the phenomenon of violent extremism. He explained how extremist groups exploit this space to spread radical and extremism ideologies through social media platforms, electronic games, and chat rooms, with the aim of attracting and recruiting young people into deviant ideological groups.
The seminar also highlighted the importance of employing Artificial Intelligence technologies in combating extremism through analyzing digital content, monitoring suspicious accounts, tracking recruitment networks, and detecting deepfake techniques. These measures contribute to identifying extremist ideological trends and limiting their spread.
The seminar emphasized the pivotal role of universities and academic institutions in building students’ intellectual resilience, promoting a culture of dialogue and peaceful coexistence, and producing sound academic content that contributes to confronting extremist discourse and reinforcing the values of tolerance and the rejection of violence and extremism.
At the end of the seminar, the lecturer presented examples of international digital platforms that have contributed to combating violent extremism. He noted that addressing this phenomenon is not limited to the security dimension alone, but is rather a battle of awareness and thought that begins with the individual and extends to strengthening the security and stability of society.
