The Human Rights Division, in cooperation with the University Psychological Counseling Division at the University of Information Technology and Communications, organized an awareness seminar on (Combating the phenomenon of violent extremism leading to terrorism), as part of the activities celebrating the International Day for Combating Violent Extremism.
The university hosted Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Abdul Wahab Hussein from the Department of Moral Guidance and Psychological Operations at the Ministry of Interior, who gave a lecture in which he addressed the concept of extremism, its types and causes, whether religious, political, social or sports-related, highlighting the most prominent factors leading to this phenomenon and its repercussions on societies, and the lecturer reviewed a number of incidents and real stories at the local and global levels, which embodied the effects and dangers of extremism.
The symposium concluded with a number of important recommendations, most notably strengthening the role of education in spreading a culture of critical thinking and conscious engagement with information, activating the role of media in spreading positive messages and raising awareness of security issues, as well as the possibility of urging technology makers to include effective tools and techniques to detect extremist content and limit its spread, and encouraging universities and research centers to conduct field studies on the phenomenon and benefit from its results in developing practical solutions.
At the conclusion of the event, the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Haider Hassan Mshali, on behalf of the President of the University, presented a certificate of appreciation to the guest lecturer in recognition of his efforts and valuable participation.
