As part of implementing the 2026 Strategic Plan for Women, the Women’s Affairs Division, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Centre at the University of Information Technology and Communications (UOITC), held a scientific seminar titled “Climate Change Awareness and Its Impact on Human Health,” presented by the faculty member, Lect. Helen Anwar.
The seminar addressed key issues related to climate change, most notably global warming and greenhouse gases, and their connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It also reviewed the manifestations of accelerating climate change and its accompanying phenomena, such as rising temperatures, intensifying droughts, desertification, and dust storms. Furthermore, the seminar discussed the resulting social and economic impacts, including migration from rural areas and the water crisis, which stands as one of the greatest contemporary environmental challenges.
Additionally, the seminar highlighted the close link between climate and health, explaining that climate change directly affects human health by increasing the risks of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, dehydration, kidney problems, dermatological issues, and gastrointestinal illnesses. It also noted the adverse effects on mental health, nutrition, and pregnancy and childbirth complications.
The seminar concluded by reviewing several solutions and measures aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change. Chief among these were transitioning toward the phasing out of fossil fuels and strengthening climate services within the health sector to help protect human health and achieve sustainable development. It emphasized that climate protection is not the sole responsibility of governments and institutions, but rather a shared duty that falls upon all members of society to safeguard the health of current and future generations and ensure a more sustainable environment.
