The University Psychological Counseling Unit at the University of Information Technology and Communications organized an online seminar entitled “Domestic Violence: A Phenomenon Threatening Family Stability and Community Safety.”
The seminar, delivered by Assistant Lecturer Khulood Saad Mohammed, addressed the concept of domestic violence as harmful behavior occurring within the family, directed at one of its members. It takes various forms, including physical, psychological, economic, and social abuse, all of which negatively affect family stability and weaken relationships among its members.
The seminar also reviewed the most prominent forms of domestic violence, including emotional abuse such as insults and psychological pressure, enforced social isolation, surveillance and control, as well as financial and legal abuse, in addition to physical, verbal, and economic violence. It further discussed the causes of this phenomenon, which stem from multiple factors, including difficult economic conditions, psychological stress, lack of awareness and family culture, poor parenting methods, as well as internal family problems.
Moreover, the seminar highlighted the consequences of domestic violence, which include psychological effects such as anxiety and depression, physical effects such as injuries, social effects represented by family disintegration, and economic impacts manifested in reduced income and increased financial burdens.
In conclusion, the seminar emphasized the importance of reducing domestic violence by activating the role of the family in proper upbringing, strengthening the role of educational institutions in raising awareness, enhancing the role of media in public education, and stressing the importance of the state’s role in enforcing deterrent laws, in addition to the role of society in promoting values of respect and tolerance.
