Medical Informatics Holds Awareness Seminar on Smoking and Its Negative Effects

The College of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Information Technology and Communications, through its Psychological Counseling Unit, held an awareness seminar entitled “Smoking… The Beginning of Illness and the End of Life.” The seminar was presented by Dr. Ghaith Hamed Hamid Al-Janabi, Director of the Chest and Respiratory Diseases Center at Imamain Al-Kadhimain Medical City Hospital.

The seminar addressed the health, psychological, and social harms resulting from smoking, highlighting the dangers of addiction to tobacco and nicotine in its various forms, including traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and hookahs, as well as the harmful effects of chemical flavorings. It also discussed the dangers of secondhand smoke in enclosed public spaces and its serious repercussions on the health of non-smokers.

The lecturer presented, in a precise scientific manner, the direct effects of smoking on the heart, arteries, lungs, respiratory tract, and bronchi, explaining its link to numerous chronic and life-threatening diseases. At the conclusion of the seminar, a set of guidelines and practical solutions were presented to help reduce this phenomenon and encourage people to quit smoking in order to protect public health.

The university organized a seminar on combating violent extremism, leading to terrorism

The Human Rights Division, in cooperation with the University Psychological Counseling Division at the University of Information Technology and Communications, organized an awareness seminar on (Combating the phenomenon of violent extremism leading to terrorism), as part of the activities celebrating the International Day for Combating Violent Extremism.

The university hosted Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Abdul Wahab Hussein from the Department of Moral Guidance and Psychological Operations at the Ministry of Interior, who gave a lecture in which he addressed the concept of extremism, its types and causes, whether religious, political, social or sports-related, highlighting the most prominent factors leading to this phenomenon and its repercussions on societies, and the lecturer reviewed a number of incidents and real stories at the local and global levels, which embodied the effects and dangers of extremism.

The symposium concluded with a number of important recommendations, most notably strengthening the role of education in spreading a culture of critical thinking and conscious engagement with information, activating the role of media in spreading positive messages and raising awareness of security issues, as well as the possibility of urging technology makers to include effective tools and techniques to detect extremist content and limit its spread, and encouraging universities and research centers to conduct field studies on the phenomenon and benefit from its results in developing practical solutions.

At the conclusion of the event, the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Haider Hassan Mshali, on behalf of the President of the University, presented a certificate of appreciation to the guest lecturer in recognition of his efforts and valuable participation.

Dean of the College of Business Informatics Inspects Dormitory Students Emphasizing the Provision of a Safe Residential Environment

The Dean of the College of Business Informatics, Dr. Nagham Hamed Abdul-Mahdi, accompanied by the supervisor of dormitory students, Assistant Dr. Ammar Abdul-Rabba, conducted an inspection visit to the university’s dormitory residents.

The visit is based on the directives of the President of the University of Information and Communications  Technology (UoITC), Professor Dr. Abbas Mohsen Al-Bakri, to follow up on the conditions of dormitory students and review safety measures and civil defense patrols.

The visit included an inspection of the dormitory building and meetings with Arab and foreign students within the “Study in Iraq” initiative, from both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as international students. It also involved assessing the students’ level of satisfaction with the housing conditions and the services provided.
